LEGALISM VERS GRÂCE

Share:

The question of Grace vs Law is one of the most profound spiritual and theological debates in the history of man. It changes not only the way people express their faith, but the way they see themselves and see others. The following is a breakdown of these two worldviews and their motivations, and the dynamics that put them at odds with each other.

  1. The Law-believers: righteous and working people For those who prioritize the Law, the spiritual and moral world is built on clear rules, principles and a structured framework. Truth is expressed through commandments (the Law) and a person's value is often determined by how well they conform to that Law. Features of this world view: Nothing comes free, you get what you deserve. For someone to be accepted (by God, the community or oneself), one must obey and make an effort – give of oneself. The law itself makes a clear distinction between good and evil, the permitted and the forbidden. That is why it is hard to live by the law. It gives structure, a great sense of responsibility, social order, and a deep respect for justice and holiness before God. The risk or pitfall: It can easily degenerate into legalism, self-righteousness (thinking yourself better than others for following the rules), or conversely, crushing guilt and fear of failure. There is no need for the Christian to fear failure or keeping the Law, he can make mistakes.
  2. Those who believe in Grace (advocates of forgiveness and favor) The graceless relate to the divine based on what they can do . The grace-valuing relate to the divine based on what is given freely . Grace is an unmerited love, a gift God gives to a person. Effort follows acceptance. We do not obey to be loved or saved, but because we know we are loved and forgiven in Christ. Humility of heart: They know their own weaknesses, and as believers in grace they know they cannot bring themselves to perfection by their own strength.(To be continued)
